17/01/20

Straide & Foxford United Masters Team 2019/20

The Division 2 promotion race was blown wide open as Achill Rovers suffered their first defeat of the season while Westport United continue to dominate in Division 1

Westport United continue to lead the way at the summit of Division One, opening up a five point lead, while at the top of Division Two, dropped points from the top two has opened up the promotion race and given hope to at last one of the chasing pack.

Castlebar Celtic are back within striking distance of the promotion places in Division Two, as they defeated local rivals Manulla ‘B’ 7-5 in an entertaining opening tie of the night. Eoin Carney has added more potency to Celtic’s attack, and he scored four goals, along with additional strikes from Declan Flynn, Marty McNicholas and Stephen ‘Jynxy’ Jennings. Michael Cuffe (2), Alan Rumley, Keith Bourke and Colin Walsh were on target for a gallant Manulla ‘B’ side.

Ballina Town were both resilient and efficient in their 5-2 win over Claremorris, which moves the Town to within a point of their opposition, with a game in hand. Despite the South Mayo side controlling periods of the game, Ballina were clinical in the final third, with goals coming from Cormac O’ Malley (2), T. O’ Connor, Malachy McCarron and a wonder goal from Eamonn Cawley. Michael Mullins and Conor O’ Keefe were on the score sheet for Claremorris.

A narrow win for Conn Rangers in a highly competitive encounter against Achill Rovers has opened up the top of Division Two, as Achill succumbed to their first loss of the season. Eanna McHale and Trevor Ward found the target for the Moysiders, while Martin Keane was on the score sheet for Achill. The win propels Conn Rangers into fifth place, as they look to build momentum and finish the season strongly.

Straide and Foxford United eventually overcame an under strength Manulla, as they stay in touch with Fahy Rovers in the battle to beat the drop. Andy Neary inspired his side with a brace of excellent goals, with Stephen Gallagher (2) and Sean Walsh also on target. For Manulla, who were without a number of key players, Michael Cuffe and David Sheridan found the net.

Ballyhaunis Town picked up their fourth win of the season, cementing their place in fourth position, thanks to an impressive 4-1 win over Swinford. As the fog began to drop in Division Two’s third game of the night, Robert Purdy had given Swinford an early lead, only for a hat trick from Martin Conlon and a Damien Matthews strike to lead Ballyhaunis to an important three points.

The trophy laden stars of Westport United maintained their 100% record in Division One, as, despite being without a number of key players, overcame neighbours Fahy Rovers with a 7-1 win. Twin towers in attack Vinny O’ Malley and Mark McNally both bagged a brace each, with further goals coming from Danny Scahill, Niall Quinn and David Hoban. Fahy, who were more competitive than the score line suggests, had Barry Koural on target.

Kiltimagh/Knock United failed to capitalise on Achill Rovers’ loss earlier in the night, as surrendered two late leads to eventually draw 5-5 with a spirited Claremorris ‘B’ side in an entertaining final game of the night. The draw sees KKU go level on points with Achill at the top of the table, but it could have been so much more, as they had goals from Colm Kelly (2), Declan Corless, Jermoe Hunt and Robert Walsh. Brendan Vahey (2), Carlos O’ Gara (2) and Kevin Duggan found the net for Claremorris ‘B’.

Player of the Day: Andy Neary produced an excellent display as Straide and Foxford United picked up a crucial three points against Manulla.

Goal of the Day: On an evening when there were up to four serious contenders, a good old wallop from Manulla’s Michael Cuffe proved unstoppable as it flew straight into the top corner with serious venom.
The Divis Declan Sweeney was once again solid as a rock between the sticks for Conn Rangers, in their win over Achill Rovers.
