Connacht Gold Cups Semi Final Preview

Kiltimagh/Knock United v Ballina Town - 19/08/2018

There is a break from league action as the Connacht Gold Cups take centre stage this weekend with Ballina Town and Westport United meeting in a highly anticipated game.

Connacht Gold Super Cup

Ballina Town v Westport United (Sat 6pm)

The top two sides in the Super League meet in Belleek as the reigning Super Cup Holders Ballina Town take on Westport United in the tie of the weekend. Ballina are one win away from being crowned Super League champions as they look to end their brilliant season by also getting to the Super Cup Final. Brendan Lavelle is their top goalscorer but they have plenty other players that can share the responsibility with Dylan Edwards, Jamie Cawley and Dylan McKee just three that have had outstanding seasons for Mick Duffy’s side. After a tough start this season Westport have turned their campaign around and they now look favourites to finish as runners up in the Super League as they have gone unbeaten in their last five league outings. Jesper Frisch and Brandon Scahill are their main goal scoring threats but it’s at the other end they have really shown their strength with some brilliant defensive displays.

Claremorris v Castlebar Celtic (Sat 6pm)
Claremorris and Castlebar Celtic meet in the second mouth-watering semi-final tie at Concannon Park on Saturday evening. Westport United ended the ten game unbeaten run of Claremorris last weekend but that defeat might have come at the right time for Mark Peters side as they will go into this game determined to show that loss was just a blip. These two sides met on the opening day of the season when Celtic won 4-1 at Celtic Park. That game will be long forgotten at this stage and Claremorris will be hoping that home advantage will be enough to see them over the line. Celtic have hit a real goal scoring patch in their season with Jason Hunt leading the way as they picked up some big wins over Iorras, Straide & Foxford United and Ballyheane.

Connacht Gold Premier Cup
Manulla B v Snugboro United (Sat 6pm)

Manulla B sealed promotion from League One last weekend as they had a big win over Kilmore but on Saturday they face the form team in Mayo when Snugboro United are the visitors to Carramore. Snugboro are on an unbelievable 17 game winning run and look odds on to win their third promotion in a row as they currently sit on top of the Premier Division. They are on for a treble after also picking up the Tuohy Cup a few weeks ago a feat which they came within a game of achieving last season when they lost to Fahy Rovers in the final of this competition. Mossy Lally’s side will pose a big challenge for them on Saturday as they are always hard to beat at home and will relish the chance to make another final at Solar 21 Park

Castlebar Celtic B v Ballyhaunis Town (Sat 6pm)
Ballyhaunis Town will be huge favourites to reach the final when they travel to Celtic Park to take on Castlebar Celtic B on Saturday evening. Ballyhaunis go into this game on a six-game winning streak which has seen them move into second place in the Premier League with four games remaining. They have some of the best attacking players in the division with Gary Higgins, Cathal Carney and Dayo Adex all in top form throughout the season. Celtic are in a relegation battle in League One so this game could be a welcome distraction as they head into their final league game next weekend. Player manager Bryan Mannion is still one of their main players but others like Nicky Canning and Dara Singh will also be key if they are to cause a shock and reach the final.
