Calor Gas Mayo Super Cup Final Review

Davitt Groarke Calor Gas presents Jamie Cawley with the Mayo Super Cup

Ballina Town are the Calor Gas Mayo Super Cup Champions for a third year in a row after they eventually got past the challenge of Manulla thanks to two extra time goals from substitute Brendan Lavelle

Ballina Town 2 v 0 Manulla - After Extra Time

Both sides began the game very cautiously and chances were few and far between in an even first half. Ballina came closest to breaking the deadlock from a freekick but it remained scoreless at the break as both sides cancelled each other out. Ballina introduced Dylan Edwards and Brendan Lavelle early in the second half and these two added more structure to the Ballina attack as they began to cause problems for Shane Durkan’s side. Edwards went close midway through the half but Matthew Flanagan was alert as he pushed the striker wide after he found himself through on goal and Edwards slipped and sliced his shot wide. Ballina always looked more dangerous in attack and the breakthrough finally arrived near the end of the first half of extra time when Lavelle finished smartly from eight yards out after he met Edwards low cross into the box. Manulla pushed forward to try to find an equaliser but it wasn’t to come and Lavelle scored the insurance goal midway through the second half of extra time as he expertly volleyed home from six yards out. Ballina were soon celebrating their second cup victory of the season and Mick Duffy bowed out from a very successful spell in charge with another cup win.
